Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: PK The Green

Usually when I spend $20 for a game it's used, greatest hits, or horrid. This one is none of the aforementioned. ESPN NBA Basketball 2K5 by Take 2 Interactive is brilliant in many ways.

First off, I was amazed to see they allowed me to create my own shoes. A sign of a true Superstar is their very own signature kicks. The presentation lives up to the ESPN tagged to the name. Various ESPN personalities supply pre-game and post-game reports, as well as sideline reports. Bill Walton comes up with the half-time report showing replays of the best plays.

Ah, and now for the gameplay. A hop-step button has been added for another dimension in storming the hoop. Also, rebounding is more in your control, no more tapping the button and hoping you'll get it.

My only complaint is that with all of the beautifully rendered character models, your created character doesn't look up to par. The cheerleaders also look like they're straight out of a Gumby cartoon.

With the same great gameplay from last year, and new things added, for a price of $20, sports fans gotta have it.

Overall score: 9/10

Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: T.R.C.

Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow for the Nintendo DS made by Konami. It is a direct sequel taking place 1 year after the events of Castlevania Aria of Sorrow.

The cast:
Soma Cruz – The reincarnation of Dracula, aka "Hero".
Mina Hakuba – Soma’s Love interest.
Yoko Belnades – Weapon synthesis specialist. Also, she is Julius Belmont’s confidant.
Julius Belmont – Rival vampire hunter and friend.
Hammer – Sells items, weapons and accessories. Buy healing stuff and forget about the rest of his goods. You can find better stuff in the castle and then have Yoko synthesis your weapon of choice. Save your gold for the soul eater ring, weighs in at 300,000 gold.
Genya Arikado – Is the overseer of Soma. Aka Soma’s babysitter.
Celia Fortner – Witch leader of a cult that is trying to bring back “The Dark Lord!”
Dario and Dimitrii – Celia’s top choices to be “The Dark Lord!”

Equipment:
You can equip one weapon, a piece of armor and one accessory. You may also equip three souls at one time. A bullet soul, I used Mandragora, a grenade type weapon. A Guardian soul, I liked the Flying Armor, Float like a butterfly, then Bat Company, Fly like a bat! An enchant soul. The ghoul is great; it allows you to eat anything. Rusty tin cans and rotten flesh, tasty!

And so it begins…
Soma and Mina are out for a nice walk in town when Celia appears and threatens Soma. Soma’s friend, Arikado, gives him a knife to defend himself from Celia’s monster hoard. This sets the stage for a great game!

My only complaint is that it took me only 13 hours to get through the main story. When you beat the game you are given a chance to play the game with Julius Belmont and Yoko Belnades, who team up to take on Castlevania. The added 10 hours for this side quest extends the playtime to 23 hours. Which is a decent amount of time for an action platformer.

Story 6/10 – Good but not great. Some good plot twists.

Gameplay 8/10 – Fun and addictive. Soul collecting is not easy. But, don’t give up! You need those souls! The Seal System was unique and different. You need to use the touch screen to trace seals and destroy any bosses. I’ve never sworn so much at my poor DS than when I messed up a seal and had to continue fighting a boss with only 10hp left. I tried to us my stylus, but I was too slow. So, I just started to use my finger after awhile.

Music 9/10 – In true Castlevania style, it was great!

Overall 7/10 – A solid game with tough puzzles and many plot twists. Have fun!

Viva Dracula!

Second, is that you can play as Mario, Luigi, Wario or Yoshi. Third, is you can open up a plethora of great mini games by catching rabbits, some of which are more fun than the main game and give you hours of enjoyment.

The main game is the same as the N64 version, however the graphics and control are a bit better on the DS. This is a great game to have for the DS. Some of the mini games especially show off the power of DS. I recommend this game for your Nintendo DS library, as it gives you your Mario fix until the new Mario Bros. game comes out.

My Review Score for this game is = 8.0
(Score 1 is throw it out, 10 is a must buy)

Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: P.K. The Green

It's nice when a company has faith in it's unique franchises. And with a company as big as E.A., you would have faith too.

I'm talking about Def Jam: Fight for NY. Boasting some of the biggest names in both hip-hop fashion and talent (who lend their voices to the game) really adds to the authenticity of the culture the game portrays.

The fighting engine is easily compared to the classic wrestling titles on the N64. This is a good thing, as some will say these are some of the best games of the genre.

There are 5 fighting styles, which as you progress, allow mixing between them. With unlockable's including wrestlers, venues, and merchandise, there is plenty to keep you playing. Fans of fighters and hip-hop shouldn't miss this one.

Score: 8.5/10

Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: Eschneider6

La Pucelle Tactics is the second Strategy/RPG game from Nippon Ichi Software for the PS2, the first being Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, also for the PS2.

In La Pucelle Tactics you play Prier, a young orphan raised to follow the teachings of the Church of the Holy Maiden. You start her adventure with her younger brother Culotte, and sister Alouette as Prier begins her long battle against the forces of darkness.

Before each battle you get some story progression and some slapstick humor. One of the coolest features in this game is that you can capture monsters by purifying them, once captured they will join your side. Another feature is you level up your weapons by causing chain reactions by purifying the colored squares that can also do some major damage to your enemies. There is a Dark world that gives you some great items, and some exclusive monsters only found there. The game has multiple endings, hidden bosses, and loads of items that will keep you playing hours and hours on end. After you meet special requirements, you can even capture boss monsters to do your bidding.

I have played over 110 hours and still haven't seen all the endings, and I can't stop playing it. If you want an easy, fun game that has a fun and engaging story, you must play La Pucelle Tactics.

Are you still reading this? Go on and start playing already!

On a 1-10 scale, 1 being throw it out, 10 being must buy, La Pucelle Tactics scores a 9.5!

Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: JLR

Here's an obscure, but excellent game that not too many people have heard about, Echo Night: Beyond for the PS2.

The premise is simple, you are on a trip to the moon with your fiance. Sounds good, right? Then you crash, and end up the only survivor. It's now up to you to find out the who, what, when, where, and why?

The game is played from a first person view, and graphically really sets the mood very well. It is a very atmospheric title, and you really feel like you're there. Your quest for answers will find you coming across many ghosts, some good, some not so good. Without giving too much away, I'll end on this note, don't let this one slip under your game radar.
Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: KWE

Mario e Luigi: Partners in Time is an RPG for the Nintendo DS, a system that I am continually glad I purchased. The game follows Mario, Luigi and their baby counterparts in a quest to save the Princess from aliens from the past that have kidnapped her. For those of you who have played Mario RPG or the Paper Marios, you'll find surprisingly similar game play with a few new twists. The adult brothers and baby brothers can act either independently or cooperatively for a unique gaming experience from the Mario RPGs. Add some spruced up dialogue with some interesting humor and nicely animated sprites, and you have Mario e Luigi: Partners in Time.

Now, for those of you who are fans of the stylus, you won't be too fond of this game. The touch-screen is virtually non-existent in this game, which handles more like a standard console game. Additionally, the puzzles will likely never stump you. A game focused more towards a younger audience, most of the puzzles are fairly straightforward and easy, relying more on an intuitive combat system to keep the game difficult. The game is also only capable of holding two saved games at a time. Not a problem if you're the only one who plays, but don't expect to be able to share it with many friends. Overall, the game is an interesting and enjoyable addition to the Mario RPGs, which is hard to put down.

I give Mario e Luigi: Partners in Time, an 8.7 out of 10.

Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: TRC

Growlanser Generations is split into two games, Growlanser 2 and 3.

This review is of Growlanser 2.

After a long delay of this game, Working Designs has released Growlanser
Generations and it is well worth the wait. If you love strategy RPGs this
game is a must have. Because of it?s griping story and great game-play. You
start out as Wein Cruz, a young boy with a dream of becoming an Imperial
Knight.

The music in the game is perfect. Although the voice acting was laughable, it
was still funny at times. Good-bye battle grid, you have free roam over the
battlefield. Your game uses navigation points to move from town to dungeon
and back again. The strategy aspect of this game goes from easy to pulling
out your hair hard after a few battles. The Graphics for this game seem like
the best of playstation 1 graphics.

Overall for Growlanser 2

I give this game a:
9.5 ? That being the fact, I’ve played many dozens of FPS type games on various platforms. In order for an FPS type game to get a perfect score, it has to excel on numerous fronts. It needs to have decent graphics, tons of different weapons, numerous unique and non-repetitive levels, smart enemy A.I. and a decent amount of game playability.

Well folks, XIII or Thirteen is such a game. Imagine taking a spy thriller type comic book and turning it into a video game. That’s exactly what the programmers at Ubisoft have created. Don’t be put off by the “comic” looking graphics. Doing so will cause you to miss a really awesome game. I know, because that’s exactly what I did. Until a friend of mine told me that I just had to play this game. So, I put my prejudice against “comic” graphics aside and played the game. I'm so glad I did!

Once I got into it, I was hooked until I couldn’t stop playing! It’s awesome how the “comic book” references are thoughtfully put into the game. Things like shooting a bad guy at the top of a cliff and then watching the words “Ahhhh!!!” come up in a balloon as he plummets to the ground. Just like it would in a real comic book!

All "comics" aside, once you really start playing the game you just forget about the cartoon like graphics and start blasting away at the bad guys. You get to shoot over 15 different weapons (knife, 9mm pistol, grenades, .44 special, double-barrel and pump-action shotguns, harpoon launcher (yes, there’s an underwater level), crossbows (nothing like headshots from long distance with this one), mini gun (think Uzi), kalash (think AK47), assault rifle (with grenade launcher), machine gun (so heavy, it actually slows you down), bazooka (a FPS game without a bazooka is not a FPS game!), sniper rifle (again, what good FPS would be complete without a sniper rifle!). And you can also use chairs, brooms, bottles, ashtrays and other objects as weapons. The latter weapons will become a necessity during the “stealth” mode levels of the game.

All of the levels are very diverse and take place in various locations, everything from sandy beaches and wooded forests to icy, snowy mountains. As you play the game, various pieces of a conspiracy involving a presidential assassination begin to unravel. Although, you yourself have amnesia and are trying to figure out whom you are as well.

There are a total of about 8 different boss fights that you have to defeat to continue in the game. Luckily the checkpoints are thoughtfully laid out so that you won’t have to cover too much repetitive ground if you should die the first few times. Some of the boss fights were easier than others, but they were all enjoyable.

There is also a 4-player split-screen multiplayer mode that includes deathmatch, team deathmatch and capture the flag. You can also play deathmatch by yourself, since the game designers thoughtfully added some “bots” to play with you during deathmatch.

XII Thirteen is rated “M” for Mature. Like most FPS type games, there is a TON of blood and intense violence. This game is all about shooting and killing people and blowing things up. Which is the case with most FPS type games. If that's what floats your boat, then get a copy of this game! It was totally awesome, all the way to the very end? The music soundtrack was also very fitting to the game.

Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: T.R.C.

Breath of Fire by Capcom for the Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Micro and Nintendo DS. This is yet another port from the SNES to the GBA system. Breath of fire is one of the lesser-known RPG’s that turned out to be really good.

You start out as a young teen and your town is under attack from the DARK dragons.

Your older sister sacrifices herself to save you and the town. Thus starts your quest for revenge. You meet up with a Princess, a Thief, a Bad Merchant, a Wolfen-Hunter, a Mole person, the Brute Ox, and a Sorceress. All of them have talents you will need to get your revenge. Be prepared for a 20 hour-long quest.

Graphics 7/10 – For a GBA based game the graphics are good. There are some movie-like full motion videos.

Music 5/10 – Same as the SNES version, Capcom could have updated it.

Gameplay 9/10 – Fun and addictive, some of the mini-games like fishing, digging, and hunting were lots of fun.

Battle System 6/10 – The same turn based system we all know and love, with the addition of being able to turn into a dragon and morph into a mix of the people on your team. The magic system is earned in levels and by finding the spells.

Overall 7/10 - The game was fun and kept me entertained until the very end.

My only complaint is that they could have updated the story and the music a bit. Burn Baby Burn!

Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: JLR

Who hasn't seen Predator? And for those who have, we all wonder why there hasn't been a great game made by now.

He's the ultimate hunter, able in both action and stealth. I mean let's face it, Dante would get waxed like a floor, and Sam Fisher would never see it coming.

So it is with great pleasure that there is FINALLY a game at least worthy of this character's truly game ready abilities. I'm not saying this game is better than the games hinted at above, but it does what it is meant to do very well. And that is, allow the player to be the hunter, and really feel like you are playing as the Predator.

To keep it short and sweet, if you ever wanted to be the Predator, buy this game, period.

A big 8.5 of 10.

It's in a game category by itself. You want to win the girl of your dreams, so you and the group "Rub Rabbits" try performing madcap stunts & rescuing her from danger. These stunts you perform have you rub, touch, shout and blow to complete the stunts and rescues.

This game shows off what the DS can really do if you develop properly for it. I didn't know there was a microphone on the DS until I played this game. Some of the stunts will have you shooting scorpions off her back, creating a sail wind with your breath to rescue the girl, and using the stylus to fill in drawings while avoiding falling people.

With over 17 chapters, this game will take some time, go back and play them again and again to unlock different outfits for the girl of your dreams. Also some Sega games will give you some more items like Sonic Advance games, Chu Chu Rocket, and Space Channel 5 for the GBA. I recommend this game, so feel the magic, and win the girl of your dreams, and start playing today!

My review score for Feel the Magic is 9.0
Legend: Score 1 is throw it out, 10 is a must buy

You can fight up to sixteen players in massive online battles. Battlefront is available on the PC, XBOX and the PS2.

On a rating scale of 1-5, I'll give this game a 4. What's different in Suikoden III is that you play the story through the eye's of 3 characters. Geddoe, Captain of the small defense force of Harmonia, Hugo, a son of Grasslands Chief Lucia, and Chris who is Captain of the Knights of Zexen. You choose whom to start the game out as, and see the story unfold by 3 points of view.

There are many secrets to this game, so I won't spoil them for you. This game took me 89 hours to beat, and that's including opening all the secrets! It's a deep game with traditional RPG battles, but also includes strategic battles later in the game as well. Also, the gathering of the 108 stars of Destiny. Each person has a skill to help you during the game. This game has a great story, great characters and some good cinemas as well. Two things make the score 8.5, the fetch quests and the lack of places to visit. I recommend you buy this game, so stop reading this review so you can go play this great RPG!

My review score for Suikoden III= 8.5
Score 1= Throw out
Score 10= Must Buy

Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: KBN

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney for the Nintendo DS is the story of a rookie defense attorney. Fresh out of Law School, Phoenix isn't quite as confident on the bench as he needs to be. Luckily, he has his mentor and veteran lawyer Mia to assist him through his first trial. Phoenix, Mia, Maya (Mia's younger sister), and a slew of other characters will come into play throughout the 5-chapter adventure. Phoenix must not only prove himself in court, but also out in the world where he and Maya must gather evidence, talk to witnesses, and finger the real culprit.

Phoenix Wright is one of those interactive story type games that are so prevalent in Japan. When at a crime scene, you must search the area for clues. Using the stylus, you will scan suspicious areas, 'borrow' vital clues from people trying to hide them, and expand your knowledge of an area for when you're in court.

The microphone also comes into play in Phoenix Wright. When in court and Cross-Examining a witness, you have the option to either call for more information or raise an objection. You can do this via the touch screen buttons, or by yelling: "HOLD IT" or "OBJECTION" into your DS system. It doesn't sound like a feature you'd use too often, but some of the prosecuting attorneys made me angry enough to enjoy yelling at them, before debunking their tower of lies!

The stylus also comes into play with the evidence itself. Often, you will be given a map or a photo in which you need to identify the flaw in a witness' testimony, or a trial-altering fact, which has been overlooked.

Phoenix Wright is broken into five chapters of play. Each one is a unique case, but fits into the overall story. For example, the murder weapon from case one will come back into play in case two, where it was again used as a weapon of murder. The characters you meet, help, and intimidate in earlier chapters will come back to help you again in later stories, and sometimes characters will follow you between stories, being a constant help or a constant hindrance. By chapter 5, you will not only be investigating crime scenes and interviewing witnesses, but you'll also be using puzzle solving, and forensics tools to help pinpoint a killer and save your client from incarceration.

Phoenix Wright is a classic-in-the-making and a game that I'll be glad to hang onto for a long time to come. The courtroom proceedings can run a bit long, so it's not a game you can really just pick up at anytime, unless you have a great memory for detail, as the game does utilize a save anytime feature. It sounds short, but can give you hours of entertainment. Sadly, there isn't much replay value. Once you figure out how the murder was done and how to prove it it's not as easy to forget. In some instances, you'll be stuck in a cross-examination when the answer suddenly hits you. After hours of thought, you're not likely to forget it, but you'll have a great sense of achievement nonetheless.

Phoenix Wright is an overall great game, worth the money to play through it at least once, and an asset to classic gameplay with a great Touch-Screen spin.
Sometimes it's hard to decide how to prove a witness is lying, even if you know what they're lying about. You need to be VERY specific at times, which can often lead to a 'Guilty' verdict for your client and a 'Game Over' for you.

Overall Score: 5 out of 5 STARS!

Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: JLR

Have you ever looked down the blade of a sword, only to see a Dragon the size of small building staring back? This is just one of the situations you will find yourself facing in Capcom's Monster Hunter.

To start, the graphics in this game are some of the most believable in a game to date. The environments are a decent size, broken up into about 8-12 small area's. But the way Capcom has done it, you get the feeling you are truly in an expansive world. Subtle things like the rolling clouds, or the billowing smoke of an active volcano, just add to an already immersive experience.

Gameplay may be the drawback for some, as the control scheme can take some getting used to, and may frustrate the novice. The unique thing about this game, is upon slaying a monster, you have 1 minute to carve it up so to speak, and take pieces of it's body to create armor and weapons. Each monster giving different pieces needed, and all having unique attributes to lend in creating your items. Huge blades, and guns to match can be crafted to boot. Slaying monsters isn't all, there are capture quests, and item gathering as well.

Off-line this is strictly a single player run, but on-line gameplay allows up to 4 warriors on any one mission, and just adds to the quests and items you already have. If nothing else, give it a rent. Aside from a steep initial learning curve and difficulty, this game truly rewards the patient player.

Overall score: 8/10

Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: Bargainzandmore

WarioWare Touched! for the Nintendo DS has got to be one of the BEST mini-game compilations I've seen so far. Not only does it take full advantage of the touch screen, but the microphone games are very cool as well. There are over 180 mini-games in all.

The music for each level is hilarious and the gameplay goes from challenging to lightning fast with each level. On a scale of 1-10, I would give WarioWare Touched! for the Nintendo DS a 9.9/10 for highly addictive fun.

Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: TRC

I sum up this game as "Thumb Exercise 101".

In Metroid Zero Mission for the GBA you play as Samus going on a mission to destroy Mother Brain and all the Metroids.

Metroid Zero Mission is a great remake of the original Metroid from the NES.

This game has lots of cool stuff added, like a whole other level after you defeat Mother Brain.

This game is very addictive. My poor thumbs hurt and I still kept on playing till the very end. (6+ hours later)

The sound for this game was good, 8/10.

Graphics were greatly enhanced from the original game, 8/10.

Gameplay was fun and enjoyable. I only wish it was longer, 7/10.

Overall, this game gets a ?my poor thumbs? 8/10.

Reviewed for Big Boss Games by: TRC

Wild Arms Alter Code F, published by AgeTech, for the Playstation 2, PS2, is a great remake of the classic Wild Arms for the original Playstation 1 system or PSX. There have been some major updates to this game.

Filgaia, the planet, is dying. The main characters Rudy, Jack and Cecilia must find out why. The planet started dying 1,000 years ago after the Great War. You must find a race of people called the Elw before it is too late to stop the demons from taking over Filgaia.

Graphics ? They have been overhauled from 2D top down to full 3D environments. With the 3D upgrade it adds a whole new dimension to the puzzles in this game, 8/10

Sound ? The "wild west" feel to the music in this game truly sets Wild Arms Alter Code F apart from all the Sci-Fi RPGs out there. 9/10

Gameplay ? On the plus side, the puzzles in this game are a lot more difficult.
One huge minus is that you have to search the world map for your new towns, dungeons and treasures. Also, they give you a handy dandy map that shows you where to start searching. 7/10

Battle System ? Turn Based similar to Lufia and Lufia 2 from the SNES. 7/10

If you are looking for a game to tie you over until Final Fantasy XII hits the U.S. this is it.

Overall I give this unique game an 8/10

Reviewed for Big Boss Games By: TRC

Tales of Phantasia is a tale of the past, present and the future.

For the first time in the USA, Tales of Phantasia is gracing our shores with a quest of revenge and time travel. This is the first installment of the "Tales of ..." series from Namco.

You start out as Cress, a young boy, and his friend go on a hunting trip, only to find that when they get back that their town is in ruins and everyone is dead.

This game has been the most fun I have ever had with GBA system. Tales of Phantasia has enough action and adventure to keep you glued to your GBA for 70+ hours.

The battle system takes some getting used to. You must assign your special attacks to certain button combinations, for instance: up, down, left or right plus B or B by itself will perform the special attack that you have assigned.

You can assign the same move to all the button combos if you want to. For standard attacks you will press up, down, left or right plus the A button or the A button by itself.

You can stop the action in the middle of an attack to give your team orders. Like you notice that you are almost dead, so you stop the action to tell your healer to cast a spell that heals your wounds.

Scores:
Graphics - They are great for the GBA, 8/10.

Sound and Music - The voice acting in the beginning of the game hooked me in for the long haul 70+ hours of musical bliss, 8/10.

Gameplay ? Battle system is perfect. Puzzles were tough enough for you to rejoice after you figured them out, 10/10.

Overall ? The most enjoyable game to grace my GBA, 10/10. Perfect score! Run don?t walk to get this game.
